Now open: “The Blues Show”

We have hung work in many media — 2-D or 3-D — that fits the Blues/blue theme: paintings of Blues musicians performing, photographs in many shades of the color blue, a cigar-box guitar, a handwoven rug, quilts, and more. If it says “Blues” or “blue” to you, it works for us.

The reception took place on Friday, February 19th, 5-9 p.m., during the opening evening of the Festival, as seventeen venues in the two counties hosted Blues musicians and FREE buses transport music lovers among them. Venues with music on Main Street in Bloomsburg included Steph’s Subs, Balzano’s, the Capitol, Rose Marie’s, Fog & Flame, Filet 18, and West End Ale Haus, as well as Nick Rusnock playing here at the Exchange. On Saturday the 20th, we opened from 10 to 3, as musicians perform at Fog & Flame and Balzano’s up Main Street from the Gallery.

In conjunction with the third annual Destination Blues Music Festival, taking place in Columbia and Montour Counties February 19th-21st, 2016, the Stairwell Gallery hosts “The Blues Show” now through April 1st.

“Cash & Carry” closes this week

ALMOST 300 PIECES BY MORE THAN 75 ARTISTS

For the second year, our holiday fundraiser show has attracted a huge range of work by artists from Columbia and Montour Counties and beyond — everyone from Bloomsburg University art professors to grade-school kids.

Every piece has a $25 price tag, with 80% going to the artist, 20% to the Gallery. (Some artists have chosen to donate 100% of their sales to the Gallery, and we thank them heartily!)

The show runs at the Stairwell Gallery through the 24th of December; for open hours, visit our Web calendar or our Facebook page.

Last week of “Nature Calls”

NATURE CALLS: Celebrating the art of Plein Air and art inspired by nature

The expression “en plein air” means “in the open air” in French; beginning in the 19th Century, artists began using the term to differentiate their approach from earlier, academic, studio-based painting. Now the term can apply when making any art outdoors, including photography and sculpture, using natural light. We encourage artists of all ages and levels of experience to bring their art — paintings, drawings, photos, sculptures, collages — made outdoors or inspired by the outdoors.

“Nature Calls” runs through this Friday, February 12. For work priced to sell, the artist receives 80%, the Gallery 20% of the sale price; artists must take care of all sales taxes.

Looking forward to seeing you here!

“Cover of a Cover/Cover of a Comic” closes this Thursday

For the fifth year, the Stairwell Gallery in Bloomsburg presents an open-call show where we invite artists of all ages and levels of experience to display their interpretations of LP album covers and/or comic art — comic books, graphic novels, the Sunday funnies.
“Cover of a Cover/Cover of a Comic” runs from the 5th of October through this Thursday, the 19th of November.

Work in past “Cover” shows has ranged among many media, including both two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces. Artists have come from the entire central Susquehanna Valley, from Wilkes-Barre to Williamsport and everywhere in between, ranging from art professors and other professional artists to amateur artists including college, secondary, and elementary school students.

All “Cover” entries should have inspiration from an existing album, or its music, or an existing comic-related item – but we leave it to the artists to determine the extent to which they re-imagine the originals: They can do direct copies or their own designs completely, in any medium. The Stairwell Gallery displays the new work side-by-side with the originals where available.

The Stairwell Gallery takes a modest 20% commission, using
the funds raised to keep presenting art to the community.
